Saturday, June 2 from 9 to 11:30 am Como Park by the Mannheimer Memorial Free, family friendly Enjoy Japanese and cherry blossom related treats while listening to Harisen Daiko, watching Japanese dance by Sansei Yonsei Kai, and a kendo demonstration by Minnehaha Kendo Club.  Mirja Hanson, former Honorary Consul General of Japan at Minneapolis, will talk about the history of ‘sakura’ (cherry trees) in Japan and the United States.  Guests from Nagasaki University and Metropolitan State University. The Japan America Society of Minnesota (JASM) and the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts (Bray) are sponsoring a special tour to Japan in May 2018 for lovers of traditional and contemporary crafts, architecture and gardens. This tour will visit sites and studios not usually included on such tours—traversing from Kyushu in the south to Takamatsu and on to Tokyo. GKIDS and Fathom Events have teamed up to bring six of Studio Ghibli’s most popular animated movies to select theaters throughout Minnesota! Cherry Tree Celebration

On June 3rd the Saint Paul-Nagasaki Sister City Committee (SPNSCC) will be hosting a Cherry Tree Celebration marking the 5th anniversary of Japan’s gift of trees to St. Paul. In 2012, Japan gifted 20 Cherry Trees to Como Park in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the original 3,000 trees given to Washington D.C., in 1912. St. Paul was one of 20 cities throughout the United States to receive trees and was chosen due to its strong relations with Japan and St. Paul’s status as a sister city to Nagasaki since 1955. TaikoArts Midwest Launch

This month is the launch of TaikoArts Midwest, a new organization focused on celebrating and recognizing the full diversity and depth of taiko arts and built on the belief that taiko has the power to make the world a better place. TaikoArts Midwest will be celebrating this new era of taiko at their Taiko Jam at the end of this month.
