Corporate Roundtable: Building Bridges

When the Mall of America opened in 1992 there was much international attention paid to this new gigantic mall concept that combined shopping, an amusement park and entertainment under one roof. People heard that Japanese tourists were flocking to the Mall of America by the “plane loads”!

How true were these “facts” about the Mall of America? Did Japanese tourists really visit the Mall of America in droves? What other areas of Minnesota did Japanese tourists visit? What is the state of tourism today from Japan to Minnesota? How important is tourism from Japan, and Asia, to the overall economy of Minnesota? What can we do to attract more tourists from Japan to Minnesota?

These and other questions will be addressed in this presentation regarding Minnesota as a destination for tourists from Japan. Continental breakfast will be served. This month’s presenters are:

Shiro “Don” Katagiri

He is the Owner and President of Kiku Enterprises, Inc. and is also a US/Japan Business and Travel Consultant. He has consulted the Mall of America’s technical seminar on its development, construction, and advising for Japanese leasing and tourism. His other experiences include International Relations/Exchange at the Minneapolis City Hall, working as the Assistant to the Treasurer, and being a panelist for the TV program “Economic Corner” and “East Meets West.”



Doug Killian

He is the Senior Director International Tourism for Mall of America (MOA). Killian gained communications experience as the Manager of Public Relations for Asia (based in Tokyo) at Northwest Airlines before joining the Mall in 2001, among other positions. Tourists to MOA (guests who visit from outside the 150-mile radius) represent 40 percent of the Mall’s visitors and approximately half of its annual sales of $1.2 billion. Killian and his tourism team participate in travel shows throughout the world. Killian earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.
